Not a great deal is known about the Elder Sign. It is widely believed to be a symbol of protection against the Old Ones, and a tool for their destruction, left behind many millenia ago by the "Elder Gods". Or, it could just be incredible coincidence that certain spawns of evil don't seem to like it. It is unclear whether the symbol itself is protection enough, or if it must also be contructed from the original star-stone material that was discovered in the early Twentieth Century. Some entities are not affected by it at all. In any case, better safe than sorry.

- Star Stone Elder Sign
- A collection of these unique and unearthly sigils was discovered by Reginald Atwood in 1930. A battery of testing has proven conclusively that the material from which they are made is not indiginous to the planet Earth. A series of trial-and-error has shown that they have incredible powers of protection in certain occult scenarios. The Star-stone Elder Signs are of varying ages, some older than the Paleoproterozoic era.

- Aleutian Elder Sign
- This hand-crafted one was found on Amchitka Island in 1993. There are recorded instances of Old One worship in that part of the world, but apparently a faction also existed to combat it.

- Sussex Elder Sign
- Kilroy was given this ancient geological formation by a mysterious woman when he was a youth. By all accounts it seems to have naturally occured, but still somehow holds the properties of a Star-stone version of the Elder Sign.

- Snow Formation
- This formation was found on the site of the incident at Bryce Pasture, the day after it occured. Barney is not certain, but believes it is the exact location of the opening gate. Closer inspection revealed that the Elder Sign here was not drawn, but rather appears on an area of ground where no snow fell that night.
