Much like the legends of vampires and their fear of the crucifix (which are false, just for the record), the basis of the protection lies in faith. According to legend, you could use any two sticks fashioned together in the form of a cross to ward off evil, provided you believed in its power to protect you.

The paper Elder Sign works (or does not work) in the same manner.

When you print out the Elder Sign from the SPONGE web site, or merely draw one on your notebook, you are afforded a certain amount of protection because of the following:

  • Agents of evil will recognize that you mean business, and have some of knowledge in this field. The Elder Sign is a strange and unique enough symbol that it isn't likely to be rendered by chance. Anyone seeing the symbol will be wary of you as a matter of principle.

  • Some entities cannot tell the difference between 20 bond paper stock and the original Sand Stone from which Elder Signs were fashioned. You can usually scare them off by waving your paper Elder Sign around in a threatening manner, and yelling out unintelligible gibberish like "Ai! Ai! Ph'tang! Orinoco Flow!"

  • Some entities cannot be killed or injured with conventional weapons, and frankly, the paper Elder Sign is better than nothing.

"To eternal life are none but fools disposed.
The wise thirst instead for oblivion's repose.
The slumber of the tomb shall be thy rest,
A shield for thee from the unwelcome guest.
If thy clay recline beneath the Elder Sigil,
Against the shambling foe it shall keep vigil."
    --The Book of Iod

"Mark it ye high, and mark it ye low,
Thou canst be kilt by what thou donst know-
and when they descend from the stars above,
The Elder Sign will send 'em back wi'a shove!"
    --The Flotsom Papers
